The Verdict

Our best pick for specialists, NueMD, has a massive selection of pre-set templates for more than 100 specialties, and its willingness to create even more make it a flexible, customizable solution that is suitable for a practice no matter its focus.

We chose NueMD from a pool of dozens of EMR systems. To learn more about our full methodology and for a more comprehensive list of EMR solutions, see Business News Daily's best picks.

Specialists require flexibility in their electronic medical records (EMR) system. Each specialty has its own needs when it comes to templates and workflows, so we focused on versatile systems that could be adapted to any specialty. There are also many offerings tailored to specific specialties, such as chiropractic or mental health-focused EMRs, but for the purposes of our review, we kept an eye on solutions that could be used for a wide array of specialties.

NueMD, our best EMR pick for specialists, offers templates suitable for more than 100 different specialty practices. It's also a widely customizable system that gives users the latitude to tailor NueMD to their own workflow. Even between practices in the same specialty, day-to-day operations can look quite different, so customization is an important feature of an EMR. Because NueMD solutions are custom built, the company does not publish pricing online, but is easily available to contact for a quote based on your needs.

Customization

One of the most notable aspects of NueMD is its high level of adaptability. It's one of the most customizable electronic health records (EHR) systems we reviewed, with the ability to be tailor-made for any practice's workflow. Its versatility is a necessity for specialists, who vary greatly from other specialists in the way they operate and the templates they require. However, NueMD is also a suitable EHR for general practice's or multispecialty practices, and can be built out or expanded accordingly.

Once NueMD builds a system out, practices reserve the right to expand and add to it as needed. Naturally, this will change the price, but in the case of our hypothetical practice we wanted to know if expanding to a multispecialty, multi-location service would be possible. NueMD will scale with your practice and make available all relevant templates as needed, of which there are more than 100 different specialties supported. In the event a provider uses a custom template that they want migrated onto the NueMD system, the company will support that as well.

Ease of Use

NueMD is a relatively easy EHR to learn and use. With a modern user interface that's laid out in an organized and clear manner, users should be able to quickly learn how to navigate through tabs to the modules and tools they need.

At the top of the screen are several tabs, which include a home screen, patient information, tickets, appointments, live help, and a new chart tab. On the home screen, providers can view appointments for the day, and are able to sort by those who have been admitted and are currently awaiting attention. Below active appointments is a list of active tasks, tasks a user has assigned to others, and patient encounters.

Under the patient info tab, users can view a patient's name, age, date of birth, and contact information, as well as their primary and secondary insurance information, and who referred them. The patient info screen also displays any allergies, vital signs captured by nurses, patient history, previous visits, prescriptions, diagnoses, etc. A series of tools, such as "add a template," appear along the bottom, making navigation to any feature required during a patient encounter easily visible and quickly accessible.

Finally, the patient portal allows patients to easily access and view all their personal information, including lab results, prescriptions, and diagnoses. It also allows them to request refills on any recurring prescriptions, making the patient-doctor relationship seamless and ongoing, rather than ending when the encounter concludes.

Implementation and Integration

Implementation for NueMD is a relatively quick process that can get any practice up and running within a few weeks. It's not the fastest implementation process out of the EHR systems we reviewed, but it's also not the slowest, and the result is a wholly custom system designed for your practice. The price we were quoted at includes NueMD's VIP setup and training, which ensures features like e-prescribing and interfaces will all be built out and function properly, as well as train staff on how to use the system.

When it comes to integrating with other systems, NueMD does a solid job of communicating with third parties. The system automatically interfaces with more than 350 labs and insurance companies, and can accommodate requests to build out additional integrations as well. NueMD offers a full list of EHRs, imaging, labs, and tech companies it interfaces with on its website so you can identify if the integrations you require are already part of the system.

Pricing

NueMD doesn't post its pricing online because of the custom nature of its EHR solutions. However, we called the NueMD sales team and posed as a small practice, with five providers who would be using the system. We requested quotes for both a standalone EHR and for an integrated practice management system with billing services included. NueMD quoted us at $1,025 per provider per month for a standalone EHR, as well as a one-time $250 fee for e-prescribing setup.

For the integrated system quoted us at $500 per month or six percent of insurance collections, whichever was higher, plus $75 per month for the EHR with e-prescribing function and a one-time $550 setup and training cost. For the billing service, NueMD offered to reduce the percentage to five percent of collections once the practice eclipsed $100,000 of revenue a month, and then once more to 4.5 percent after $150,000 in monthly revenue. The billing service also included an additional $100 setup fee. NueMD owns their own clearinghouse, so there are no additional fees for billing services.

Remember, the total price is always unique to the custom EHR solution requested, and depending on your practice's size and needs, you could be quoted at a much different level. Bear that in mind when shopping around, but typically, more features and more customization will result in higher price. Larger practices and hospital systems generally cost more as well, because most EHR systems are billed on a per provider, per month basis.

Customer Service

Our customer service experience with NueMD was excellent. We spoke with two enthusiastic and knowledgable representatives who accommodated our needs and spent a great deal of time speaking with us over the phone, despite our expressed intention to refrain from making any buying decisions any time soon. We immediately received a follow up message from a sales representative with detailed pricing information and features, although we did feel explanation about implementation was a little bit light considering we focused several questions on the topic. However, overall, NueMD's customer service staff provided us with a great deal of information that we felt adequately satisfied most of our questions.

Customer support for NueMD's EHR software is available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. Training staff is available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.

Limitations

The quote we received was significantly more expensive than some other EHR vendors we reviewed, although it wasn't the most expensive, either. However, it's important to consider the customizability and scalability of the NueMD platform, as well as the completely included customer support and ongoing training. While the price is somewhat higher, NueMD offers a level of support across all specialties that was rare amongst EHR vendors, and the system can also be easily tailored to specific workflows regardless of specialty.
